NIght Moves 5k

Last Friday night our family participated in the March of Dimes Night Moves 5k. This was the first time we did an event all as a family so it was a new experience and a lot of fun! We have a special affinity for March of Dimes because all three of our children were premature and spent time in the NICU after birth.

Friday afternoon we had a doctor appointment for our 1-yr-old and after that was done we headed home to prepare for the race. Our older twins were still in daycare so we were able to get everything set before it was time to pick them up. We have a double jogging stroller and a single jogging stroller so I first had to figure out how to compact both into the van. After some fiddling, I got the double in the trunk and the single took over one of the seats in the middle row. I’m pretty sure I could get them both in the back, but for the event, I just wanted to get them in and get going. Continue reading »

Giant Eagle Multisport Festival 2012 – The Coach’s Perspective

July 29th was my main race for the season: the Giant Eagle Multisport Festival Olympic Distance Triathlon. Since this will be fairly detailed, I’m going to break it up into multiple sections: pre-race/swim, bike/run, post-race/observations, and GPS recording. The Coach also wrote a post about her experience as a spectator watching the point-to-point race along the way.

Triathletes and spectators, alike, could not have asked for a more beautiful morning. My day started at 4:57 a.m. Rob was already gone when I got out of bed. At 4:50, Rob’s Dad took him out to Alum Creek, the start for the swim. We were on the road at 5:52 a.m., three kids packed in the van (toddler twins and a baby), coffee in hand (for the Grandparents), water (for me), and a cooler full of food and drink. We parked in a little parking area off of Lewis Center road. There was a gravel path that was about 0.5 mile from the road to the Creek. Dad took the twins down in the “Strech Limo” and I carried Baby about halfway, while Mom rolled the food down on the umbrella stroller. Twenty-one pounds of Baby got heavy, so I put him in the stroller and we continued on. That trip took about 20 minutes. Continue reading »

Giant Eagle Multisport Festival Race Report – Pt 3 – Post Race/Observations

July 29th was my main race for the season: the Giant Eagle Multisport Festival Olympic Distance Triathlon. Since this will be fairly detailed, I’m going to break it up into multiple sections: pre-race/swim, bike/run, post-race/observations, and GPS recording. The Coach also wrote a post about her experience as a spectator watching the point-to-point race along the way.

 Post Race

After I took some time to drink a lot of water and eat some fruit, I went out to find my family. They were chatting with Don about the race and kids and stuff. We waited around for the awards ceremony, mainly because they were giving away a free Felt triathlon bike again. Of course I didn’t win it, but it was fun hoping maybe I would have. In the mean time the kids got to enjoy the festivities at the finish area. They got balloon animals and my daughter got her face painted. When the organizers announced that there were some issues with the timing and results we decided to get going home. It was an exhausting morning but a lot of fun for everyone. Continue reading »

Giant Eagle Multisport Festival 2012 – GPS Recording

July 29th was my main race for the season: the Giant Eagle Multisport Festival Olympic Distance Triathlon. Since this will be fairly detailed, I’m going to break it up into multiple sections: pre-race/swim, bike/run, post-race/observations, and GPS recording. The Coach also wrote a post about her experience as a spectator watching the point-to-point race along the way.

A quick word about my GPS recording plans for the race. I decided to use two different watches to record the race with. The first was my Garmin Forerunner 910xt. It’s a dedicated triathlon watch with an open-water swim mode and has become my constant training companion over the past few months. I love it and it’s all set up to work with my bike sensor and foot pod for running. However, during my other race this year, the OU AIA Triathlon back in April, I had an issue with the watch. When I finished the race and tried to upload it, the data was corrupted and wouldn’t work. So I ended up doing some major workarounds to have any kind of recording of that race after the fact. This time I didn’t want to have the same problem so I brought along my trusty old Garmin Forerunner 305. This watch was my previous training watch and worked great. The main differences between the two are the swimming features and the size. Continue reading »

Giant Eagle Multisport Festival Race Report – Pt 2 – Bike and Run

July 29th was my main race for the season: the Giant Eagle Multisport Festival Olympic Distance Triathlon. Since this will be fairly detailed, I’m going to break it up into multiple sections: pre-race/swim, bike/run, post-race/observations, and GPS recording. The Coach also wrote a post about her experience as a spectator watching the point-to-point race along the way.

The Bike

Entering the transition area my focus was just getting out of my wetsuit. I wasn’t too concerned with catching my breath since I was feeling stronger than usual coming out of the water. Getting over to my bike I started getting out of the suit which took longer than I would have liked. I probably should have practiced getting out of it quicker, but it’s already got a couple rips in it and I didn’t want to get any more in it. I got it off and got my sunglasses and helmet on. Immediately my sunglasses fogged up, but I couldn’t put them anywhere so I just had to live with them fogged up while I got my socks and cycling shoes on. I packed my swim stuff away and grabbed my bike to head out on the road. Continue reading »
